Week 5: Client Presentations & Approvals
Work Placement Experience
During Week 5 of my placement at CS Consultancy & Construction Pvt. Ltd., I moved into a client-facing role, focusing on finalizing the design presentation for a luxury restaurant in Kathmandu. I delivered a Keynote presentation showcasing 3D walkthroughs, material palettes, and biophilic elements aimed at evoking the intended spatial experience.
Midweek, a last-minute client request for a private dining area required quick spatial and ceiling design revisions. I also updated ceiling layouts to accommodate HVAC systems identified via BIM clash detection. These adjustments needed to be made rapidly while preserving design integrity.
The firm’s Agile-inspired culture supported this fast-paced work. Tools like Miro enabled seamless remote collaboration and iterative feedback, reflecting CS Consultancy’s tech-forward and client-responsive approach.
Contribution to the Organization
In Week 5, I led a client presentation that secured key design approvals, including a revised ceiling layout. Using BIM tools, I resolved MEP conflicts early, preventing rework. I also quickly integrated a private dining area, preserving the timeline while adding value to the project.
Measurable outcomes from this week included:
- Client design approval secured ahead of schedule.
- Reduced risk of on-site construction rework due to early BIM clash resolution.
- Faster internal turnaround time on layout revisions, thanks to the collaborative use of Miro and cloud-based file sharing.
Learning & Application of Theory
This week exemplified the integration of Agile Project Management principles, particularly in responding to change. Agile’s iterative approach was evident in our workflow: client feedback was welcomed mid-process, and design changes were quickly reviewed and implemented without halting project momentum. The use of tools like Miro, Revit, and BIM 360 reinforced Agile values such as collaboration, adaptability, and responsiveness.
Additionally, Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle was reflected in my process:
- Concrete Experience: Delivering the client presentation and responding to live feedback.
- Reflective Observation: Analyzing how the private dining area request disrupted spatial logic and team workflows.
- Abstract Conceptualization: Considering flexible layout strategies that could accommodate future client changes with minimal disruption.
- Active Experimentation: Implementing and testing layout changes in real-time with design and engineering teams.
Critical Analysis & Evaluation
Week 5 marked a significant point in my professional development, particularly in terms of client communication and adaptive design thinking. Presenting to clients sharpened my ability to translate technical solutions into compelling narratives connecting design choices with functional and emotional value.
Strengths Demonstrated:
- Client empathy and storytelling: I was able to present design ideas in ways that resonated emotionally with the client, aligning with CS Consultancy’s empathetic, user-centered approach.
- Digital fluency: My proficiency in tools like Revit, Keynote, and Miro enabled efficient coordination and professional-quality visuals.
- Problem-solving under pressure: I responded quickly to spatial and technical constraints, revising the design in time for final client review.
Areas for Improvement:
- I aim to further develop my BIM coordination skills, particularly in managing multi-disciplinary models across platforms.
- I would benefit from enhancing my public speaking confidence, especially when addressing multiple stakeholders with varying levels of design literacy.
- Strengthening my time-buffering and contingency planning skills would help better manage unexpected client revisions without impacting workflow.
Conclusion
Week 5 illustrated the critical intersection between design, technology, and client engagement. The ability to revise layouts on short notice, while maintaining alignment with both technical requirements and aesthetic goals, was a valuable learning experience. I not only contributed to the advancement of the restaurant project but also strengthened my capabilities in visual storytelling, digital collaboration, and client-centered design thinking. These are essential skills I will continue to develop in my pursuit of becoming a well-rounded interior designer.
