Week 3: 2D/3D Design for Apartment Project
Work Placement Experience
This week, I worked on a high-rise apartment in Lalitpur, focusing on a modular kitchen design within a tight floor plan. The project emphasized functionality in compact urban spaces, a common challenge in the Kathmandu Valley.
Key Tasks:
- 2D drafting in AutoCAD for layout with bamboo partitions (earthquake-resistant and sustainable)
- 3D modeling in SketchUp for space-saving furniture (foldable tables, dual-use cabinets)
- Lighting simulation with Enscape, enhancing render realism and aligning with the firm’s digital workflow
Challenges:
- Accommodating extra storage in a compact kitchen without compromising flow or structure
- Ensuring the design aligned with CS Consultancy’s aesthetic and ergonomic standards
- Iterating designs quickly in response to client and team feedback
Contribution to the Organization
- Designed vertical and corner storage units that increased usable volume by 15%
- Improved client approvals by 1.5 days through clear 3D visuals
- Helped standardize lighting presets for small interiors, enhancing design efficiency across projects
Learning & Theoretical Application
- Lean Design: Eliminated spatial inefficiencies through multifunctional elements
- Resource-Based View (RBV): Used bamboo as a sustainable, strategic material
- Design Thinking: Rapidly prototyped and tested storage solutions
- Visual Communication: Applied spatial hierarchy in 3D presentations for clarity
Evaluation & Growth
Gains:
- Strengthened skills in SketchUp, Enscape, and client-oriented prototyping
- Developed spatial and ergonomic problem-solving capabilities
Strengths:
- Effective use of digital tools
- Proactive engagement in layout optimization
- Solid grasp of spatial logic in modular design
Improvements Needed:
- Deepen Enscape lighting knowledge
- Improve AutoCAD drafting speed
- Learn more about kitchen ergonomics and modular standards
Conclusion
Week 3 was a key shift from concept to execution. It tested my ability to balance creative solutions with real-world constraints and highlighted how sustainable materials like bamboo can drive both innovation and practicality in space-constrained environments.
