Week 2: Concept Development & Mood Board Creation

Work Placement Experience

In Week 2 at CS Consultancy & Construction, I transitioned from site assessments to conceptual design, creating mood boards for the Kathmandu luxury restaurant. My task was to visualize the fusion of Newari heritage with modern industrial aesthetics, aligned with the firm’s “Heritage Reborn” philosophy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developed mood boards featuring:
    • Traditional woodcarvings
    • Industrial pendant lighting
    • Biophilic elements like indoor plants and timber
  • Used Adobe InDesign to compile visual narratives
  • Integrated client feedback via CS Connect, revising color palettes for a brighter tone

Contribution to the Organization

My work contributed to faster client approvals and design alignment by:

  • Enhancing client engagement through clear visual storytelling
  • Promoting locally sourced and eco-friendly materials, supporting the firm’s green design ethos
  • Reducing back-and-forth by adapting mood boards in real time based on feedback

Learning & Application of Theory

  • Design Thinking (IDEO): Applied all five stages—from empathizing with client goals to testing refined visuals
  • Change Management (Kotter): Adapted swiftly to client revisions, maintaining design coherence
  • Aesthetic-Usability Effect: Leveraged strong visual appeal to communicate abstract concepts more effectively

Critical Analysis & Evaluation

Growth:

  • Gained skills in design communication, material selection, and biophilic integration
  • Improved ability to balance creative expression with client needs

Strengths:

  • Creative flexibility and attention to visual detail
  • Strong technical use of Adobe InDesign
  • Commitment to sustainability in concept development

Areas for Improvement:

  • Deepen understanding of color theory
  • Improve awareness of material availability and sourcing logistics
  • Sharpen presentation skills for non-technical audiences

Reflection

This week highlighted the strategic role of mood boards in design bridging concept and client vision. It strengthened my skills in visual storytelling, cultural integration, and responsive design core competencies for impactful, sustainable interior environments.
